Our Story

Front view of Pulteney Pharmacy

There has been a medical practice in Great Pulteney Street for nearly ninety years, and we still have patients whose families have been registered here for generations. The Pharmacy was originally a separate business, dispensing traditional medicines from its premises in Bathwick Street. Very much a family affair it was run by Donald Tuddenham, affectionately known as “Tuddy”, a well-loved and much respected pharmacist. Despite his recent passing he is still fondly remembered by many members of the community for his long service and dedication to his profession.

When Tuddy retired he passed the pharmacy to his assistant Tom Moles.  Tom had been Tuddy's assistant and continued the tradition of single-handed practice for several years before he moved the pharmacy into the Pulteney Practice in the 1990s.  This move introduced a seamless service for pharmacy services alongside the medical practice.  Tom's vision brought new ideas to the pharmacy and as we entered the new Millenium his leadership brought modern solutions to traditional problems.  The practice invested in the pharmacy to offer a new and comprehensive medicines service under one roof and gave patients the chance to pick up their medication as soon as they had seen the doctor.  Once the digital revolution arrived new computer systems were introduced and later a branch pharmacy was opened in Bathampton village to serve the local community and support the village.

Tom worked tirelessly for more than a decade alongside his wife Jo and ultimately, on retirement, they realised their dream and moved to rural Wales to enjoy country walks and peace and freedom away from the madding crowds.  After Tom the baton passed to our current Superintendent David Tomlinson under whose leadership we have introduced free home deliveries, dossette boxes, medicine reviews and other systems for improving customer care.  David continues to establish links with the surgery and an integration of pharmacy services in a complementary way to enhance the patient experience and avoid duplication of work and unnecessary delay for patients.

David's commitment to customer care is clear to see and his support for his staff has led to the development of a happy and dedicated team working for you!
